Protecting CUI at NMSU with the Physical Science Laboratory

Welcome to New Mexico State University's dedicated platform on Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) management in collaboration with NIST 800-171 and Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Level 2. In an era where information is a critical asset, understanding how Controlled Unclassified Information is handled is of paramount importance, especially within the dynamic environment of a university setting.  At NMSU, CUI is considered part of ‘Controlled Data’ according to the ARP, and therefore falls under the purview of the Physical Science Laboratory, or PSL.

Controlled Unclassified Information, or CUI, refers to sensitive but unclassified information that requires safeguarding due to its potential impact on national security, privacy, and other critical interests. This encompasses a wide array of data, including research findings, student records, and other valuable information generated within the university. Recognizing the significance of CUI is essential as it ensures that information is adequately protected against unauthorized access and disclosure.

In alignment with the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) guidelines, specifically NIST 800-171, and the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Level 2, our university is committed to implementing robust controls and measures to safeguard CUI. These standards provide a structured framework that not only protects sensitive information but also enhances the overall cybersecurity posture of the university.

Join us on this journey as we explore the intricacies of managing CUI in a university setting. Discover how these controls are applied, learn about the importance of compliance, and gain insights into the broader implications of securing sensitive information within the academic environment. Together, we aim to foster a culture of cybersecurity awareness and responsibility, ensuring the protection of valuable information for the benefit of our academic community and the nation at large. Welcome to a secure and knowledge-driven future at NMSU.

CMMC is important for NMSU.

CMMC Level 2 contains 110 individual controls in 14 categories with multiple requirements for each control.

CMMC requires a high level of documentation and standards adherence.

Failure to meet CMMC requirements could result in loss of contracts, grants, or even the ability to apply for the entire University.
